It's been 2 1/2 years since we've been back to the US. We've spent time with family across the country and ended our trip in Los Angeles. It feels like a giant hug to reconnect with everyone.
Today we had the most amazing experience. A good friend of ours volunteers at the APEX Protection Project and we got the opportunity to spend the day with these beautiful beasts. Co-Founders Paula Ficara and Steve Wastell are just incredible humans. They have dedicated their lives to save the wolf species through education, rescue and advocacy.
Before we stepped into the sanctuary, we had to go through a full transformation into a calm, patient, fully engaged being. It was required. Required for the animals to feel calm in our presence. It's interesting how this is sometimes difficult say when you're in your house or yoga class... but suddenly when it's required to be in the presence of a wolf pack you can summon it within.
And we discovered something else. Whalen is violently allergic. After this lick, a face swelling lick tattoo was left behind. We also discovered topical benedryl. Worked like a charm, not even a tear.
I will never forget this day or this feeling of being still with the wolf pack.
